Safety Equipment

Our mission is to support excellent, innovative education and research by facilitating safety success and empowering UT Dallas community members to minimize risks and implement safe practices.

One of the ways to accomplish this mission is to provide guidance, training, maintenance, and troubleshooting for various types of safety equipment in the laboratories and across campus.

Fume Hoods

Safety is the primary function of fume hoods. Proper performance and use of the fume hood are essential in providing safety to the user and other laboratory personnel. They exhaust toxic, flammable, noxious, or hazardous fumes and vapors by capturing, diluting, and exhausting these materials through the ductwork. If used correctly, fume hoods also provide spill containment and physical protection against fire and explosion.

Eyewashes & Safety Showers

Eyewash stations, safety showers, and drench hoses provide immediate decontamination for individuals exposed to hazardous substances. They are critical in labs, workshops, and any area where chemicals or biohazards are used.

Biosafety Cabinets

A biosafety cabinet (BSC) is a specialized containment device designed to protect laboratory personnel, the environment, and the work being performed from exposure to hazardous biological agents.

Gas Monitoring Systems

Stationary gas detectors alert nearby personnel when materials such as methane, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and other dangers occur in a laboratory or workspace. Some detectors are tied into the building’s fire alarm panel and can alert first responders that an area may need emergency assistance.
