Outreach
Congratulations to the UTD Risk & Safety Team for winning the CSHEMA 2024 Lab Safety Awareness Week Award! To learn more about our event and to bring these activities to you, contact our team.
At UTD we are committed to creating a culture that promotes workplace safety and improving compliance through community engagement. Through collaboration across campus, we work together to prevent exposure to hazardous substances, pathogens, injuries, and other dangers that may be present on the university campus.
Minors in the Laboratory
Community members under the age of 18 are welcomed to explore the exciting opportunities on our campus! All programs and sponsored events must comply with the Program for Minors.
Faculty and staff planning to host a program, activity, camp or event for minors, including unpaid laboratory internships and mentorships, whether in-person or online, on campus or a remote location, are required to follow the Programs for Minors policy UTDSP5015 – Programs for Minors and supplemental guidelines (pdf). The Programs for Minors Office will work with program directors and coordinators to ensure adequate plans are in place to provide a safe learning environment for each registered PACE. All PACE for minors must be registered and approved by the Programs for Minors Office prior to the start of the event.
If your sponsored program is hosted in a space with hazardous materials or involves a hazardous materials demonstration, you must complete the Authorization for Minors in Laboratories & Technical Spaces form and send it to Safety@utdallas.edu 30-days prior to the start date for Safety Review.
Completed and signed forms must be forwarded to PACE@utdallas.edu.
Adult Learning Programs in the Lab
An adult is a person over the age of 18 years and not currently enrolled at UTD as student in a degree-granting program. On campus, we have numerous opportunities to explore research and promote engagement with the community. All facilitators of adult learning programs are expected to comply with UTD’s Policies on Lab Safety.
If your sponsored program is hosted in a space with hazardous materials or involves a hazardous materials demonstration, you must complete the Authorization to Host an Adult Learning Outreach Program form and send it to Safety@utdallas.edu 30-days prior to the start date for Safety Review.

Laboratory Safety Awareness Week
Laboratory Safety Awareness Week is an annual event held in February that recognizes the successes of laboratory health and safety programs and offers information and ideas on how to keep our faculty, staff, and students safe. Every year the UTD Lab Safety Team host several events cross campus to bring awareness to laboratory hazards before they cause injury. Each event is centered around Lab Safety Land and Roetem!
Who is Roetem?
Roetem (meteor spelled backwards) is the game token to remind community members to play the Lab Safety Land daily trivia. Roetem and their friends crash land on campus every February to learn about the different components of safety and to bring this knowledge back to their planet. Roetem travels using a space ship that oddly crashes every time it approaches UTD. They discover several towns, islands, and metroplexes that are centered around key safety programs to prepare YOU on being safe in the laboratory!

Laboratory Safety Awareness Week 2025
This year’s event was held on February 10-14th, 2025 all across campus! We hosted informative topics that brought awareness to:
- Laboratory Coat Safety
- Eye Safety
- Safety Symbol Recognition
- Hazard Recognition
- Safety Bingo!
Roetem and their safety explorers crash landed on campus and followed the community in a series of Kahoots! that explored the above topics featured in Lab Safety Land. At the end of the week, the community member that scored the highest point value won UTD Swag. Since Roetem learned about a lot of hazards on this campus, they equipped themselves with safety glasses to explore UTD again! Because Roetem was so concerned about bringing potentially hazardous materials home to their planet, they also happened across UTD Lab Coats. The coats provided them even more protection against hazardous materials!

Laboratory Safety Awareness Week 2024

- Emergency Safety
- Fire & Life Safety
- Biological Safety
- Chemical Safety
- Occupational Health
Roetem and their safety explorers crash landed on campus on Feb 12th and followed the community in a series of Kahoots! that explored the above topics featured in Lab Safety Land.
